ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਵਲਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ 1897 ਵਿੱਚ ਅਣਵੰਡੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਜੇਹਲਮ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਚੱਕ ਹਮੀਦ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਲੱਛਮੀ ਦੇਵੀ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਚੰਦ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੰਸ ਰਾਜ ਸੀ। ਜਦ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਅਪਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਰੱਖ ਲਿਆ।

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਇੱਕ ਘੱਟ ਆਮਦਨੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਸਨ। ਸਿੱਟੇ ਵਜੋਂ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਦੇਰ ਤੱਕ ਜਾਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖ ਸਕੇ। ਪਰ ਚੌਥੀ ਜਮਾਤ ਪਾਸ ਲੜਕੇ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾ ਤੇ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਸਦਕਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ 50 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਲਿਖੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਉੱਘਾ ਨਾਵਲਕਾਰ ਬਣਿਆ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਪੀਐਚਡੀ ਕੀਤੀ। ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਹਿਆ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕਈ ਵਿਵਾਦਿਕ ਵੀ ਰਹੇ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਧਰਮ ਨਿਰਪੱਖਤਾ, ਧਰਮ, ਪੁਰਸ਼-ਸ਼ਾਹੀ, ਦਮਨਕਾਰੀ ਸਮਾਜਕ ਢਾਂਚੇ, ਦੇਸ਼ ਭਗਤੀ, ਜਾਲਮ ਸਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ, ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੂਖਮਤਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਾਰੀ ਆਦਿ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ। ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੂਚੀ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੈ:

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਵਲ 'ਇਕ ਮਿਆਨ ਦੋ ਤਲਵਾਰਾਂ' ਨੂੰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਸਰਵਉੱਚ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ 1962 ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਇਆ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੋਤਿਆਂ, ਦਿਲਰਾਜ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੂਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਵਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੂਰੀ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਿੱਟਾ ਲਹੂ, ਖੂਨੀ ਵਿਸਾਖੀ ਅਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪਾਪੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹਨ।ਉਸਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਨਾਵਲਾਂ ਜਿਵੇ ਕਿ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪਾਪੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਨਹਰੀ ਜਿਲਦ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਟੀਵੀ ਸੀਰੀਅਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਰੂਪਾਂਤਰਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਿਤਰ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਪੱਖ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਅਕਸਰ ਅਣਦੇਖਿਆ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਸੰਗਰਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਉੱਪਰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਕ੍ਰਾਂਤੀਕਾਰੀ ਹੋਣ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਭਗਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਵਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਦੱਸ ਕੇ ਪਾਬੰਦੀ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ। ਉਦਾਹਰਣ ਵਜੋਂ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ 'ਖੂਨੀ ਵਿਸਾਖੀ' ਜੋ ਕਿ ੧੯੨੦ ਵਿਚ ਛਪੀ ਸੀ, ਵਿਚ ਜਲਿਆਂਵਾਲਾ ਬਾਗ਼ ਦੇ ਸਾਕੇ ਦੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਉੱਪਰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਜਲਿਆਂਵਾਲਾ ਬਾਗ ਦੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਸਮੇਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੋਸਤਾਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਉਥੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਸਨ।

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ 1971 ਵਿੱਚ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਗਰ ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਈ।

As he is famously known in literary circles, Nanak Singh Novelist was born in a village named Chak Hameed of Jhelum district of undivided Panjab in 1897. His mother's name was Lachhmi Devi, and his fathers' name was Bahadur Chandra. As he was born into a Hindu family, his earlier name was Hans Raj. Later, he converted to Sikhism and changed his name.

It is said that Nanak Singh's was a low-income family. Consequently, he couldn't continue his studies for too long. Thus, a 4th pass boy becomes a prolific writer who wrote more than 50 books in his lifetime, and many students of Punjabi Literature did their Ph. Ds on Nanak Singh's works. Through his writings, he touches upon a vast range of issues, many of which generated controversy. The themes of his writings include secularism, religion, patriarchy, repressive social structures, patriotism, state as an oppressor, subtleties of human behavior, among others. His novel Ik Mian Do Talwaran received the country's highest literary honor, i.e., the Sahitya Academy award in 1962. His grandsons, Dilraj Singh Suri and Navdeep Singh Suri, have translated many of his works into Hindi and English, including Chiita Lahu (White Blood), Khooni Baisakhi, and Pavitar Paapi (Saintly Sinner). Some of his novels were also adapted into movies and T.V. serials like Pavitar Paapi and Sunehri Jild.

All is said about his literary works; what remains unrecognized is his contribution to the freedom struggle. Many of his works were banned by the colonial government for their revolutionary and patriotic tune. For example, his book Khooni Vaisakhi describing the barbarism of the Jalianwala Bagh massacre. Mr. Singh was present with his friends when Brigadier Dyer and his men started firing on an unarmed crowd.

Nanak Singh died in 1971 in a village named Preet Nagar in district Amritsar, Panjab.
